The Presbyterian Women's Purpose best describes what the women's group of First Presbyterian Church is all about: Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves: to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible Study, to support the mission of the church worldwide, to work for justice and peace, and to build and inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom.
There are two circles (Bible study groups) that make up the local Presbyterian Women's group: Ruth circle, which meets every month on the 2nd Tuesday at 10:00 am in homes. Presently we are studying "An Abiding Hope…The Presence of God in Exodus and Deuteronomy", which is the 2013-2014 Horizon's Bible study. Meeting at 6:00 pm at the church is Deborah Circle. The members gather during the months of September through May and are presently reading and discussing "The Will of God in an Unwilling World" by J. Ellsworth Kalas.
All of the women meet together four times a year in Heritage Hall of the church for a potluck lunch. There are town major offerings taken during two of the four meetings: the Thank Offering and the Birthday Offering.
Our group participates in the community Holy Week services in the spring of each year, helping by preparing and serving a meal to all of the community that wish to attend. This year the proceeds were dispersed to three local agencies: CASA, Church Women United, and Familie Tiez.
For over thirty years the local Presbyterian Women has supported the mission of the elderly by sponsoring a monthly birthday party and bingo games every month at the Craighead Nursing Center. Both our members of our group and the nursing center's residents benefit from this regular contact.
The next meeting of the Ruth Circle will be at the home of Mary Vollman, Tuesday, July 8, at 10:00 am.
